I have been traveling a lot recently, mostly to India because, honestly speaking, you can’t get enough of the country’s architectural brilliance. If you have browsed my other posts, you must have understood that I am a history lover, and India has a lot of history to uncover. I can’t tell you everything at once, but at least I have traveled enough to have something to share. So, without further introduction, here are the ten biggest Forts in India I have visited.
Mehrangarh Fort: When I saw the 410m magnificent Fort, I was stunned and speechless at its beauty. Constructed around the year 1459 by Rao Jodha, the Mehrangarh Fort is one of the biggest forts in India. It’s a massive aristocratic opulent structure, and that fact is enough to make your visit and love it.

Red Fort: Before visiting the Red Fort, I thought Delhi had less history and more modernization, but I was proven wrong again. Entirely built out of red sandstone in the 17th century, the Red Fort in Delhi was once the epicenter of Mughal affairs, but now this Fort, spread across 254 acres, is one of the most exquisite tourist attractions in India.

Gwalior Fort: Something I have noticed about the biggest forts in India is that the bigger the Fort is, the earlier its construction period. Standing tall on a hilltop, the Gwalior Fort is a magnificent structure built around the 10th century. Though there is no known proof for this fact, what’s known is that it was made by Suraj Sen and later the Hunas, Tomars, Mughals, and Marathas.

Golconda Fort: If grand architectures allure you, you should visit the Golconda Fort in Hyderabad (the city famous for Hyderabadi Biryani). Surprisingly enough, it’s located on the outskirts of the town. Built-in the 12th century, it was rebuilt in the 16th century. As far as history goes, you got to see it yourself to get the best experience.

Jaisalmer Fort: According my experience of the Jaisalmer Fort, it wins my heart for the views. Trust me, the sights you will get of the city from the top of the Fort will take your breath away. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site under Hill Forts of Rajasthan, a must-visit for tourists and history lovers alike.

Agra Fort: My experience in Agra became ten times more memorable after visiting this Fort. It was one of my Golden Triangle Tours with my family. We went early in the morning to see the Agra Fort, and I must tell you, the picture of the red sandstone walls, Indo-Saracenic architecture, and magnificent structures are still etched in my mind.

Kangra Fort: A fact about forts that amazes me is that these strong structures are lucky enough to witness the changes in the country through the ages. One such Fort is Kangra Fort, the biggest Fort in Himachal Pradesh, probably the oldest because it’s around 3500 years old.

Chittor Fort: The Chittor Fort speaks of bravery, valor, and true courage. On top of a hill, climbing from the plains of River Berach, this once capital of Mewar Kingdom is now a genuinely remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Chittor Fort
Panhala Fort: The Panhala Fort in Panhala, Maharashtra, is the largest Fort in the Deccan area. The 1312 ft fort is a feast to the eyes. Another fantastic fact about it is that it took 100 years to build it, which is pretty fast if you ask me.

Srirangapatna Fort: If you are a fan of Indo-Islamic architecture, I recommend visiting the Srirangapatna Fort. This heritage structure spanning 240 acres, has four palatial gates and palaces that always impress visitors.
